Racism in Sports

What’s up people?

What a crazy and interesting week we have had. For starters I had to bring out the winter coat again as the weather has truly gone MAD. And in the world of sports; I saw the great Barcelona lose twice in one week. When was the last time that happened? Now am planning on spending my entire weekend in front of my television, and pretend like I am some hot shot general manager for my favorite football team that has all the answers on how to EXCUTE an elite NFL roster.

Ok people; let me get focused…

I am a SPORTS JUNKIE and I Love it. I mean you name the sport and chances are I have watched, played or even Gambled on it. Now that’s another blog in itself that I will share with you all down the road at some point. I love sports so much that despite having over 1,000 channels to choose from everyday on my cable box, my television viewership only consists of ESPN, Fox Soccer, NFL Network, NBATV, etc…Get the point? It so bad that one of my primary functions in the lives of my family and friends since childhood has been to serve as a lifeline and settle any sports trivia related debate. And guess what; I take pride in knowing that people expect me to give them the most competent and accurate sports answers on the spot without needing to conduct any form of research. Why? Because I only work off memory. No Googling here for “P”.

Now that I have gone on my little soap box about my sporting pedigree, I would like to return your attention and focus back to what transpired just a few days ago here in the DMV with our Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). Some of you all already know or might have heard about this story and the rest of you all might have missed it. Basically after choking and quitting on themselves the past four years and counting in the NHL playoffs, the Washington Capitals found a way some how to pull together on the road and shock the hockey world by beating the defending NHL champions Boston Bruins in Game 7 on their home ice. Now here is where things begin to get interesting or shall I say RACIST.

It turns out that the game winning goal in that same Game 7 was not only the biggest goal in the franchise’s history for Washington but it was also scored by Joel Ward a BLACK Barbadian Canadian hockey player. Now how KOOL is that? Brothers playing hockey… NWO! (Full Disclosure, I never saw the goal because I believe I am a jinx for teams I root for by the way). And immediately after Ward’s game winning goal sent Boston fans home upset and angry, many took to social media (Twitter) to not necessarily voice their displeasure with their home team and their performance but at the fact that they lost in the playoffs on a game winning goal scored by a BLACK MAN! I mean WTF!

Here is where I take issue with all the cowards of today. There are so many internet gangsters out there that people have grown extremely comfortable to say whatever comes to their minds without consequences, especially when they take positions on topics without any merit to back it up and their findings are totally baseless. In the past three months alone, I have seen incidents like a player from my own favorite football club (LFC) utter racist epithets to his opponent and still refuse to be accountable for his actions. I have seen the former England football captain get caught using a racial slur to an opponent and take no responsibility. And how many BANANA throwing incidents have we read about in the Russian football league with fans targeting African footballers on the pitch.

Here is how backwards and ignorant these people are; when they make statements such as “stick to basketball; hockey is a white man’s sport”… What they fail to realize is that the only reason more blacks and people of color are not able to play sports like hockey, tennis, golf and skiing is entirely based on economics not interest. Those sports are the most costly youth sports to enroll children in and many people still think of them as luxury or novelty sports like take rowing for an example but fact is more minorities are now participating in all types of sporting programs and have made significant strides in a very short period. So you go ahead and continue to use your slurs, we going to continue to get our young boys and girls ready to DOMINATE.

Don’t look back; we coming.

Na Wa O (NWO)!

Na Wa O! - is slang or a pidgin term used back home in Nigeria and other parts of Africa that simply illustrates something unbelievable, makes you speechless or leaves you flabbergasted.
